Pruning, tree removal or tree surgery work on trees over a certain size in the Canberra region requires development approval from the Tree Protection Unit at the Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) – this includes the trees in your backyard. The development application requires a tree survey and report from a qualified arborist like TreeWorks.
This regulation applies to:
- trees over 12m high or with a canopy 12m or more wide trees with a trunk circumference of 1.5m or more, 1m above natural ground level and / or
- trees which have two or more trunks and the total circumference of all the trunks, 1m above the natural ground level, is 1.5m or more.
TreeWorks is able to apply to the Tree Protection Unit at the Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) on your behalf.
If it’s an emergency and the tree poses a risk to property or life you can apply for an Urgent Circumstances authorisation.
Contact Canberra Connect on 13 22 81 any time of the day or night to get an Urgent Circumstances authorisation. Depending on the risk you may get an on-the-spot approval.
In an emergency situation, TAMS recommends the tree surgeon undertaking the work makes the request for the urgent circumstances approval.
If there’s a tree on the nature strip which you feel needs pruning or removal you must contact Canberra Connect on 13 22 81. Do not undertake any pruning of trees on the nature strip.
