It’s time to get bushfire ready

Bushfire season is underway in Canberra and the region.  Now is the time to take steps to reduce fire hazards around your house.  The main reason houses burn during bushfires is from traveling embers of burning bark, twigs and leaves which are carried by the wind and start spot fires.  We’ve put together a list of tips to help you get ready.

How to help prevent bush fires near your home

Here’s some tips to reduce your risk from embers:
  • clear your gutters of leaves and debris
  • get rid of fire hazards like branches hanging over your roof or within 10m of your house
  • remove dead trees or shrubs
  • remove bark hanging from trees
  • trim bushes around the house
  • tidy up dead leaves and twigs around garden
  • ensure irrigation pipe is buried well below the surface
  • move any flammable liquids away from house
  • keep lawn short
