Bushfires: don’t risk trees too close to your house

With all the rainfall we’ve had in the Canberra region recently, it’s easy to forget past bushfire seasons. As we approach summer, you should be making sure your home is protected in the case of a bushfire.

Hot, dry and windy days are ideal conditions for a bushfire. You can take action to reduce fire hazards around your house, garden, or backyard. Spot fires carried by high winds are one of the main causes of house fires during the bushfire season.  We have put together a list of some of the steps you can take to lower the risk of embers starting spot fires, or radiant heat starting fires in your garden and backyard. Ways you can reduce the risk of bushfires in your backyard or garden:

  • Cut back all overhanging branches from the roof and walls of any buildings or structures
  • Clear your gutters of any leaves and debris
  • Trim shrubs and bushes from around the house
  • Remove shrubs and bushes from under trees
  • Remove dead trees or shrubs
  • Remove bark hanging from trees
  • Rake up dead leaves and twigs around your garden
  • Bury your irrigation pipe well below the surface
  • Remove flammable liquids away from the house
  • Keep your lawn short
