They say a good arborist can tell the health of a tree by running their eye over the first six feet of a trunk.
I’m not convinced of that but there is no doubt trees can send signals they are in distress or give off signs to show they are in good shape.
Over the next few months TreeWorks will let you in on some trade secrets so you can diagnose your own trees.
Have you ever wondered what the red ooze is coming out of bark or a crack in the bark and looks like the tree is bleeding?
It is called kino. The red ooze is chemically made by the tree, and it takes a lot of energy for the tree to produce this substance. This kino lies is the capillaries under the bark area and when your tree gets attacked by a borer the tree shoots out this sticky red ooze to seal up the hole. The goo or kino hardens quickly and drowns the borer….. So, it’s the tree’s way of protecting itself.
If your tree is unstressed it produces lots of this stuff. But if the tree is stressed it stops making kino and preserves it’s energy.
So looking after your trees is important so they have the energy to fight off pests.
